Regarding their documentary value and size the documents of three municipalities (Borsod, Abaúj-Torna and Zemplén County [comitat]) and one city possessing municipality (Miskolc) form the most crucial part as well as core of the records kept in the Archives. These collections constituted separate archives before 1950, when the amalgamation of the said institutions in a united system was carried out at the same time with unification of the three counties. Furthermore, 1950 was the year of the establishment of the regional archives, when the four originally separated municipality archives were united in the organisation of the public archives of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County. In November 1952 the institution was given the name State Archives of Miskolc. The Sátoraljaújhely City Archives worked as the organ of this institution, then in 1959 under the name of Ferenc Kazinczy State Archives became separate. The regional archives were financed by the councils from 1968 and the archives of sátoraljaújhely integrated to the organisational structure of the County Archives as branch archives. The institution was named Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Archives, which has been working according to modified legal framework since the political transformation in Hungary, and it has been the branch, organ of the Hungarian National Archives since 2012.
The archives of Miskolc, Borsod County and artificial fonds of several settlements, schools, associations, moreover pieces of the collection belonged to the archives of Abaúj and Abaúj-Torna Counties are housed in the centre of the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Archives in Miskolc (in consequence of the chief town of that county was Kassa, the bulk of the records concerned with that territory are kept even currently in the State Regional Archives Kosice), while the documents regarding historical Zemplén County and the Zemplén part of the new county (since 1950) are available in the Sátoraljaújhely Branch Archives. The copies of the registers and records created since 1950 belonging to the city of Miskolc, the Borsod, Gömör and Abaúj region of the county. Furthermore the documents of the legal and economic authorities, the farmers’ cooperatives as well as the archives of the Hungarian Socialist Workers’ Party are researchable in the Alsózsolca Brancsh Archives.
